Begin your adventure with a drive from Kigali to Nyungwe Forest National Park. The journey takes about 4 to 6 hours in a reliable 4×4 safari jeep with a knowledgeable guide. Nyungwe Forest, located south of Lake Kivu and on the border with Burundi, is renowned for chimpanzee trekking. Along the way, stop to visit local markets and the traditional palace of Rwanda’s former king in Nyanza. Enjoy dinner and an overnight stay at Gisakura Guest House, nestled on the edge of the forest. After breakfast, embark on a thrilling chimpanzee trek in Nyungwe Forest. The forest is home to diverse wildlife and offers an exciting opportunity to see chimpanzees in their natural habitat. The trek can be challenging, so be prepared for a rewarding experience. Return to Gisakura Guest House for dinner and a relaxing overnight stay. Start your day with a boat cruise on Lake Kivu, where you’ll enjoy stunning views of the lake’s islands and beautiful scenery. After the cruise, drive to Volcanoes National Park, with a lunch stop along the way. Settle into your lodge for the night, with options including Le Bamboo Lodge or La Palme Hotel, both offering comfortable accommodations near the park. On this day, head to the Kinigi Park Headquarters to begin your gorilla tracking adventure in Volcanoes National Park. Trekking through the forest and hills can be demanding, sometimes taking up to 8 hours. Once you find the gorillas, spend one hour observing and photographing them. Afterward, visit the Iby’iwachu Cultural Village to experience traditional Rwandan music, dance, and customs. Return to your lodge for dinner and an overnight stay. On your final day, visit the grave of Dian Fossey, an American zoologist who dedicated her life to studying mountain gorillas. Fossey’s work at Karisoke Research Center was crucial in understanding and preserving these magnificent creatures. Her book, Gorillas in the Mist, and the 1988 film adaptation brought her work to global attention. Visit her grave and learn about her legacy. After lunch at the lodge, return to Kigali for your departure.
